Innovative Research Universities (IRU)
advancing sustainability in Australian universities and communities

Since their inception, IRU member universities have been committed to inclusive education and innovative research that advances our communities.

The new Sustainable Universities and Communities report highlights the sustainability initiatives and achievements of the IRU’s seven members. It provides a data-informed record of their progress towards sustainability, using metrics and indicators aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to measure impact.

The report incorporates research, education, and campus operations, such as energy efficiency, waste reduction, and sustainable procurement. Initiatives at a strategic level include the development of sustainability frameworks and policies that guide university operations and decision-making.

It also showcases partnerships, through the numerous collaborative projects with government, industry, and international partners, which are crucial for achieving the SDGs.

The IRU aims to continue its leadership in sustainability through ongoing innovation and collaboration. However, lasting successes can only be achieved in collaboration with policymakers and communities, as frameworks and funding models that support sustainable development for all Australians need to be developed.
