Setting up Australia’s research future

The Innovative Research Universities (IRU) welcomes the announcement of the review into the Australian Research Council (ARC).

Education Minister Jason Clare’s announcement of the review is an important commitment to ensure Australia remains at the forefront of innovative research on the world stage.

In particular, his recognition of the importance of fundamental research across all disciplines will ensure a balanced Australian innovation system that supports competitiveness and wellbeing.

IRU Executive Director Paul Harris welcomed today’s announcement saying:

“The ARC is a critical part of the Australian research system, supporting innovation at universities right across the country.

“Over the last two decades there has been significant change in the Australian and global research landscape. This review is an important opportunity to ensure that the ARC remains fit-for-purpose to support high quality research that continues to deliver significant benefits to the community.”

The IRU also notes the Minister’s commitment to ensure that ARC research funding has clear and efficient processes, including review of the National Interest Test.

We look forward to working with the ARC and review panel, which includes Professor Susan Dodds from IRU founding member La Trobe University.
